We were given the task of researching a large media cooperation and I chose IPC. The IPC are well known for selling NME, Country Life and The Field. As NME is part of my genre of my music magazine. As the IPC are widely known for their magazines etc, I think that from doing this research, I think that there is a niche in the market for my magazine. When I was researching a large media cooperation I discovered that IPC sell many common magazines. When i am creating my magazine this will have an impact by I have to make the magazine look very professional as I think there is a niche in the market for my magazine.

This is my magazine ideology which gives the name of my magazine name, target audience, where I will draw inspiration from other magazines and the selling points. This will also give me something to fall back on and remind me of what i am creating and for who. When I was trying to think of a masthead for my magazine I discovered it is very difficult to think of it. As it has to be short, catchy and eye catching so it has to be something that stands out. The impact that the ideology will have is that I can always refer to it, when i'm creating my magazine and for who i am creating my magazine for.

We were given the task of creating a questionnaire on zoomerang.com, the questionnaire was at aimed at our own magazines. We created own own questions based on our magazines such as the genre that the audience prefer, price range, promotional offers, gender, which genre they prefer either rock or indie, the outcome was that most people preferred indie and current favourite magazine. Then we had to publish it on a social network site; Facebook. Then we had to get about twenty responses and this will contribute in in the designing of my magazines; front cover, content page and DPS. Which will help me reach the ideology of my music magazine and I will keep revisiting my market research to create my music magazine. When I analysed my results from the questionnaire I was amazed to discover that this questionnaire was very helpful. The results of the questionnaire will have have an huge impact when I create the magazine as I will refer to the results. As this will tell me what the people want in my magazine and what will make them buy magazine over another. 

Double page spread analysis

Here I have analysed two double page spreads (DPS); Q and Kerrang. This is giving me a sense of idea of how a double page spread will look like. These two double page spreads are very similar in which they have a main image on the right hand side, the main headline is on the left and the typography is big and bold. Also Q and Kerrang have used an drop capital to entice the reader. Then again Q and Kerrang have some difference in their DPS in which they have placed the article in different positions; Q have placed it on the left and in the color of the text is white which stands out on the black background. Then Kerrang have positioned it on the right also in white text color and placed on a black background (which is Linkin Parks trousers). From analyzing the two DPS i have realized when I do my own DPS I should considered the different aspects of a DPS and I have considered the back ground, the positioning of the main image and the article and what type of shot I use. When I was analysing the magazines I was amazed to find that DPS are very simple as they have one image on one page and on the other page they have the text.  When I was browsing through other DPS I found that all DPS are very self explanatory. The magazine that I am creating will include a DPS which I will keep very simple as they have a better effect on the audience. 

Contents page analysis

This is showing that I have analysed two content pages (Kerrang and Q). Analyzing these content pages will give me a sense on what to base mine on. Kerrang and Q contents page are quite similar in which their is an equal amount of image and text on both. When I design my my contents page I would like to have the same amount of text and images because I don't want the content page to be dominated with images because it won't look as professional and if their is too much text it will look dull and lifeless. Then again I think that Q magazine have opted for a traditional content page in which the stories/ articles headings are on the left hand side, the main image is on the left. Kerrang haven't chosen to follow the traditional content page, they have chosen to challenge the codes and conventions in which they have layed out their content page. when I was looking at contents pages I discovered that all magazines have their own individual ideas for content pages, so I wanted to make my own individual. The impact this had is that it is very hard to design an contents page, this made me think carefully on how I wanted to design my contents page.

Front cover analysis

This is showing my three front covers (NME, Rolling Stones and Q) which I have analysed. The three magazines I have chosen are related to my genre (Rock and Pop) of the music magazine.  I then analysed the three front covers by the main image used, left side third, puff, masthead and so on. Analysing these front covers will benefit me when I  design my front cover of a music magazine. It also gives me a idea how to use different image shots (long shot, mid shot, long shot and close up), puff, left side third, mast head and so on, also how the audience will see it in their perspective and how it will be portrayed to make a certain point. I am not sure but I would like to follow the path of Q magazine although all the magazines are quite similar but I prefer Q magazine because I like the house style they have used and the way they set their front cover out and the images they use. When I was researching front covers of magazines I discovered that there was a similar layout in all magazine front covers, it was sort of like there was a norm that this is how a magazine front cover should look like. The impact this had on my front cover is that I wanted my front cover to be different but not too different as it may look unappealing that I have drawn my magazine away from the traditional front cover of a magazine.

This is showing my preliminary task which we had to create at the beginning of term and we had to create a school magazine front cover and contents page. I based the front cover on the GCSE results 2011 and the contents page i based it on a variety of topics (GCSE results, prom, new years 7's and BSF). This links in with the music magazine by making me aware of the software i used which is Microsoft Publisher and how magazines are layed out. I think that my front cover looks more like a magazine as the way it is layed out on the page but my contents page isn't well designed because i didn't know how to design a contents page. Looking back at this task i can think of many ways to improve the contents page; i wouldn't of made the two boxes at the bottom and i definitely wouldn't of couloured those two boxes green and red and i would also say that the contents page looks like it's aimed at children in a primary school, i think it doesn't look professional. On my front cover of my preliminary task i would of changed the red barcode to black because you don't see red barcodes anywhere. I discovered when making a school magazine it is very similar to a music magazine. But then when I was making the school magazine it was difficult that everything had to be exact. The impact of this it made me think of how I was going to design my front cover of my music magazine, it especially made me think of how I was going to design my contents page.
